Gary is an environmental biologist and MCZ Associate, specializing in ants. He received his Ph.D. from Harvard in 1981 and has been conducting field studies on the ants of New England since 1990.
I am an evolutionary biologist and entomologist who uses species-rich herbivorous insects to study how the insect-plant interface has contributed to diversity and will respond to global change. I use genomic tools to investigate factors limiting ranges and opening adaptive pathways to speciation. I want to determine how a given insect genome has adapted to its habitat and may allow movement beyond. In addition, I integrate comparative morphology, ecology, and genetics to delineate and describe new taxa. With this integration across approaches and data, I work to advance a fundamental understanding of the genomic and biotic architecture that enables species and clades to succeed.
Postdoctoral Fellow in Materials Science and Mechanical Engineering, Harvard University
Graduate student through August 2021; biography below is based on graduate studies:
Before pursuing my PhD at Harvard, my background had been largely focused on examining various ecological processes throughout the natural world. As an undergraduate at Cornell University, I completed a degree in Natural Resources with a focus on applied ecology. During my time at Cornell, an internship at Harvard Forest sparked my love of insects.... Read more about Alyssa Hernandez

Negaunee Assistant Curator of Pollinating Insects, Field Museum, Chicago
Postdoctoral Fellow in OEB, 2018-2019
Graduate Student through 2018
Biography below is based on graduate studies:
I am generally interested in understanding the origins of the spectacular insect diversity. For my thesis work, I am studying a little-known but very promising system of insect herbivores and their host plants: palms and their flower visitors.... Read more about Bruno A. Souza de Medeiros
