Mosquitoes of Brazil

In a collaboration with Fabio Laurindo da Silva (University of São Paulo) and Tony Kiszewski (Bentley University), we are using population genetics to study the demographic history of mosquitoes in the Atlantic Forest in Brazil. This project has supported the work of two Brazilian postdocs. We collected samples from study sites in northern and southern regions of the Atlantic Forest, and sequenced the DNA of about 500 of these mosquitoes. We will use this data to infer the demographic history of several species of mosquitoes under past climatic fluctuations, which will also provide insights into their future. Additionally, this DNA data will be used to study the geographical distribution of interaction networks between these mosquitoes and associated species, such as their hosts and malaria parasites.
